What was your first 'sexy' read?
What Was Your First Sexy Read?
When I was young and just going through puberty, I came upon a book with a beautiful woman in a big, long flowy dress on the front cover, who was in the arms of a sexy, muscular man in a cowboy hat. Reading the blurb, I discovered it was a story set in the wild west about a strong-willed woman and a tough talking loner. The blurb hooked me and I lost myself in this exciting adventure.
Then I got to the sex scene.
I couldn’t believe what I had stumbled upon and somehow knew it was a taboo subject for my young age of eleven or twelve. I hid away in my bedroom, hiding it away to read whenever I got the chance. And re-read and re-read.
Apart from sex education at school, I understandably had never heard much about sex before. My parents were never the affectionate type, so I had never even been exposed to the type of affection some husbands and wives shared with each other. This book was my first true peek into romantic relationships and what they could mean for me.
The hopeless romantic in me was born.
When my time with this book was discovered (and can you believe I cannot even remember the title?), my mother informed me that I was a bit too young to be reading such material. So, I turned to Sweet Valley High. Nowhere near as exciting as that Western, but it would do for now.
I eventually found myself moving away from romance to read anything and everything relating to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and thus began my love of urban fantasy. However, romance was always in my veins. I wrote fan fiction with the explicit reason to inset my own character who would fall in love with one of the cannon characters.
I moved back towards the sexier reads with The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl, a collection of blog posts by real life, high class escort, Belle De Jour.
Eventually, after my split with the ex, I found authors such as Olivia Cunning and Molly O’Keefe who wrote about hot, alpha heroes and on the softer end of the scale, G.J. Walker-Smith and CJ Duggan who write beautiful, Aussie-based love stories. The world of romance has become my oyster. I still have so much to read and discover about this wonderful section of the book world. And it’s all thanks to a taboo read as a tween.
I would love to know what your first sexy read was. What led you into the world of romance and what do you love about it? Add your thoughts in the comments below.
